Tornadoes Ravage Chicago, Leaving Widespread Damage

11 Confirmed Tornadoes Touch Down, Survey Teams Deployed

Initial Assessments Reveal Significant Damage

At least 11 tornadoes touched down in Illinois and the Chicago area during a rare round of February storms Tuesday, leaving widespread damage and power outages. The National Weather Service has issued a warning for potential tornadoes in the area, and has deployed six damage survey teams to assess the extent of the destruction.

Maps show the Chicago area riddled with potential paths of damage, with several confirmed tornado touchdowns in the suburbs. Officials have urged residents to stay indoors and avoid affected areas as survey teams work to determine the severity of the damage.

The storms, which brought high winds and heavy rain, knocked down trees, damaged homes and businesses, and left many without power. Chicagoland residents are assessing the damage and cleaning up Tuesday morning after the powerful storms ripped through the area Monday night.
