Survey Reveals Low Awareness of Lung Cancer Screening

38% Aware of Lifesaving Screening Option

Washington, D.C. - March 8, 2023

A new survey by the American Lung Association (ALA) has found that only 38% of Americans are aware that lifesaving lung cancer screening is now available for those at high risk.

The survey, which was conducted among 4,000 adults across the United States, also found that:

  • Awareness of lung cancer screening has increased by 27% since 2022.
  • Only 38% of respondents knew that CT scans were now an available screening option for people at high risk for lung cancer.
  • The majority of respondents (62%) were not aware of any lung cancer screening options.

The ALA is urging all Americans who are at high risk for lung cancer to talk to their doctor about getting screened. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States, but it is often curable if it is found early.
